Great job everyone.

Jimmy, keep searching and let us know what you find.

Kris, That is great about the lower west coast dates. I also heard you met my brother in law in New Haven!

Marklar, We have a couple of maybes for the Oregon shows. Kirk wants to do Eugene but wants SBD access. Not sure he will do it unless the band gives him SBD access for a matrix. Problem is its not my decision in the very least.

^^^hahaha, yeah we must have the same "bro" b/c I had just emailed my friend justin yesterday about taping the LA shows and he told me he just got contacted by someone about it. I have known that cat forever and credit him with being the one who got me into video taping. If you're talking about Justin H(please don't make me spell his last name) then this is a small world.

No... I met Justin from my days on Yonder and Keller Tour back in 1999 or 2000. It was when he was living in Nebraska. Back then, I regularly attended shows(like once every 6 weeks) in Lawrence, KS. He was also a big fan of the bluegrass band that I do all the audio/video archive work for(Two High String Band & Billy Bright one of the world's best mandolin players). We both have several really good friends in common and thats how we met. Back in 02 was when I first started looking at buying a video camcorder to record shows and Justin was like the only cat around doing that back then. He's literally videotaped hundreds of shows on the cheap little camcorder he had forever- dozens of them have never been transferred either, but they all looked pretty damn good. Last time I ran into him was at Wakarusa a few years back(right before he moved out to LA for his new job). We still talk fairly regularly through myspace and I send him video ever so often of the THSB guys. Justin is 100% solid.

Are you sure he's going to tape SD too? When I talked to him he told me wa doing black crowes/raq/ and the rads all the same weekend. Hopefully you convinced him to drop all for RAQ.

Small world.

This thread title reminds me of a great far side comic. It was a picture of a guy wearing a shirt that said "Bad Spellers of The World Untie"

Why i felt the need to share that...Who knows?

I met Ian this year at Camp Bisco. Def a sweet kid. I was hanging with him FOB before the biscuits set and the clouds started to roll in-Ian dissapeared and within 5 minutes it was a full on MONSOON. His Schoeps and 722 were taking a beating so I grabbed my umbrella and held it down until the set was over. I then grabbed all his shit and brought into the covered FOH area. When he returned we all played stupid about his gear. "Haven't seen it Ian. Maybe you should check Lost and Found." I was surprised to see he wasn't bothered in the least. "Eh, I'm sure someone grabbed it for me." blink.gif

LOST: one pair mk41, one pair CMC6, one pair kc5... ohmy.gif ohmy.gif

We all had a good laugh about it afterwards laugh.gif

He does recording for Jerry Joseph and makes great tapes. I have an email into Ed asking for permission.

Jerry Joseph opened for RAQ last time in Eugene and there was one taper for Joseph. When Joseph ended I saw the guy starting to pack up his gear. I went over to him, asked if he ever saw RAQ before, offered to buy him drinks (plural) if he stayed. The guy was not a nice guy, (literally) laughed at me at the thought of staying at the concert he already had bought tix for to tape RAQ. Might have been a bad night or was mad RAQ wasnt the opener. whatever, we all have bad nights. I hope you can get to him.

RAQ has super nice tapers compared to a lot of other bands. Tapers are generally nice, but I also think its funny when one gets pissed off- it can be one of the most brutal experiences in the world for the offending party.

I've seen some classic taper "flipouts" in my day. Beer spilled on gear. Talking by mics. I saw this one drunk/spun asshole at a SCI show in Austin singlehandedly take out the entire taping section- just stumbled thru like a hurricane trying to get to the restroom. As all the tapers were coming up to kick his ass the guy threw up all over their decks. I was so thankful I did not tape that night.

My all time favorite flipout was at Old Settler's Music Festival 4 years ago. It was the last night of a 3 day festival. It rained harder than I had ever seen at a festival/show. We had a great setup by the SBD and had all of our gear well wrapped in several garbage bags. 3 hour DAT tapes, after 3 days of taping we had consistant signal so need to fuck with levels, we had everything so perfect considering all of the rain. During the worst part of the rain, the group of 5 or so tapers ran over to a vender's tent about 50 feet from the SBD area. We still had a decent visual on our gear but got distracted when one of us busted out some incredible hash we'd been hanging onto the entire festival. As we begin to drink beer, smoke hash, and celebrate a job well done with taping some great acts(Del McCoury, Peter Rowan, Dave Grisman, Hot Rize Reunion, and more) in the shittiest of conditions, a few minutes turn into about 2 hours worth of sitting in that tent and socializing with my bretheren. The rain stops and we all walk back over to our gear and notice that my buddy's DA-P1(the first in the chain) was exposed and no longer carefully wrapped in its plastic covering. Not only that, but the trash bag had been ripped open and it rained inside so as now his deck is sitting in a bag full of water almost completely submerged. The top part of the plastic bag that was ripped away is now sitting in a tiny ball on top of his DA-P1 with a RCA to 1/8" coming out of the tiny pile of plastic. Ofcourse we unrap it and its some minidisc recorder who came in and tried to get a patch while we were away. Instantly my friend recognizes the gear as belonging to a guy that we all know down here in Texas all to well- he comes to shows drunk off his ass(have seem him throw up/pass out at several shows). He had asked for a patch earlier in the festival but didn't have his own cable and none of us had one for a minidisc or weren't offering it. Ofcourse my buddy flips out b/c he had just bought this deck and it is now ruined. We try to calm him down but he grabs this guy's minidisc and throws it into the creek that runs through the venue. He then goes and finds this guy passed out in a chair(literally) in the beer tent. My friend orders 2 pitchers of beer and walks over to this guy and pours them all on his head. Drunk guy charges my buddy and the 2 of them start rolling around the beer tent swinging dukes before the rest of us tapers broke it up. I still laugh my ass off. The drunk guy was told he'd never be able to tape another show in texas again. We still see him all the time and he & my buddy are cool now b/c the guy paid him $300 towards a new deck which was more than we thought we'd get out of him. Pretty hillarious.

In fact Kris, our boy Justin told me a story of when he was video taping a show and had some drunk walked up to him and poured a full glass of beer on his camera. I've personally had to lay hands on a guy who was fucking up my videotaping one night.

Moral of the story- tapers get tested all the time at shows. I think that explains a lot about our attitudes at shows.

Thats hilarious!

I think a lot of people just don't see the investment tapers make. Like $300 for a DA-P1 which is nice but a DA-P1 new at least when I bought one was $1200-$1300. You always have to have one eye on the band and one on the gear. And then after the show the hoards of people trying to get your email address, phone number, its almost comical. Hell I still have close friends who hound me about sending them CD's. Get an internet connection already!

no doubt... not to mention the folks who walk up to you during the set while you're trying to enjoy the show and monitor gear/levels/etc. For a long time one of my best friends Jeff Ingram(aka Junkyard- probably the most well known Keller taper) used to give people my contact info. So I'd get some random phone call or email asking about a tape for a show I never recorded in Iowa or Chicago. Ironically, Lou Gosain knows all about Texas's drunk ass Taper Barry. Ned ask Lou about Barry from Texas next time you see him. It has been a year and a half since Keller has been to Texas, but I'd be shocked if Lou doesn't recognize the name. Just tell him "the drunk guy who always wears the old school Keller Buzz shirt." Lou laughs at us because everyone refuses to let this guy patch out of them. We'd rather send him a copy of the show then let him near our gear.

My buddy at Old Settler's was just happy to get $300 considering he threw that guy's minidisc in the creek. He did get his DA-P1 used for $750, but he had just got it tuned up for an additional $200. He is also smart and carries a personal property liablilty for his gear. At the time, for like $15 a year he got $2000 in coverage. I have a personal property insurance for my computer and camcorder. I pay like $150 a year thru USAA, but I get $10,000 in protection and some peace of mind about my gear. Plus when your technology gets old and outdated, whoops.....
